Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy (ESWT)
Extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT) is a relatively new treatment for the management many musculoskeletal problems. It works by directing mechanical shockwave impulses through the skin and into the area needing treatment. Typically multiple treatments are required, usually in the range of 3 to 5, with a 7 day gap between treatments. Treatment is very safe and rarely causes any significant side effects other than minor bruising. Whilst it’s exact mechanism of action is not completely understood it is thought to promote tissue healing and provide long term pain relief.
Currently Medicare and the private health insurers do not cover the costs for this treatment therefore there is a charge of $110 per treatment on top of any consultation fees.
Common conditions suitable for ESWT:-
ESWT can be used to treat certain conditions of the shoulder, elbow, wrist, spine, hips & groin, knees, calf & shin, ankle and foot.
Common diagnosis amenable to treatment with EWST include; plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendinosis, medial tibial stress syndrome, patellar tendinosis, quadriceps expansion tendinosis, trochanteric pain syndrome, hamstring tendinosis (prox & distal), rotator cuff tendinosis & calcific tendinitis, frozen shoulder medial & lateral epicondylosis, bone pain post fracture/stress fracture.
